HISTORY

On July 20, 1972 the Hawaiʻi State Board of Education adopted the Guidelines for Student Representation and Participation, which established the Hawaiʻi State Student Council (HSSC) and district student councils for every public secondary school.

In 1972, the Council started with seven members from the seven school districts.

In 1973, the Council developed a revised draft of the Student Bill of Rights and Responsibilities.

In 1998, the Council was expanded to twenty-five members.

In 2004, the constitution was amended to implement a sixteen-member council, representing each school complex area in the state.

In 2012, the Council decided to expand to a forty-three member organization in order to yield more concerns from the students and expand communication.
